Eagles, Mustangs rake in the honors on 10-5A all-district baseball team

Russell Williams - Defensive Player of the Year

Published: Wednesday, June 6, 2012 11:00 AM CDT
As has been the case for the last few years, Rowlett and Sachse battled down to the wire for the 10-5A championship.

The Mustangs actually had the upper hand against the Eagles by sweeping the head-to-head series, but Rowlett had the last laugh as it edged Sachse by one game in the overall race to claim its seventh consecutive district title.

Not surprisingly, the two teams were evenly matched in the race for postseason awards as well, but both the Eagles and Mustangs found themselves with plenty of representation on the 10-5A all-district team.

Rowlett had nine players named to the 10-5A first team and racked up four superlative honors.

Senior Brett Byrum was named the district's most valuable player. Byrum, a four-year standout on the Eagle varsity team, posted an 8-1 record with a 1.04 earned run average. In 47 innings of work, Byrum struck out 50.

Jerad Wilson was named offensive player of the year after hitting .386 with four triples and 22 runs batted in. Jerad Fowler was tabbed as co-defensive player of the year – along with McKinney Boyd junior Russell Williams – and while he was noted for his work in the field, he also did the job at the plate, hitting.409.

Rowlett head coach Paul Carmon was named 10-5A coach of the year after leading the team to a 25-9 record, the district crown and a trip to the area finals, where they lost to Belton.

This is the end of an era of sorts for the Eagles, as the three superlative award winners, as well as the six additional players on the first team will all be graduating.

"We've had a real good run, this group has been a part of four district championships in four years and we've made the fourth round of the playoffs five times since 2007, so we've had a lot of success," Carmon said. "But this will be completely different (next year) with so many new players. It is going to be a lot different situation than we have had the last few years, so it will be a challenge, but I am looking forward to it."

While Rowlett and Sachse garnered most of the superlative awards, they did not win them all.

Kyle Clausing of Naaman Forest was named co-pitcher of the year, while Boyd freshman Will Hollis was tabbed newcomer of the year.

The Broncos also landed four players on the first team in senior pitcher Cameron Sweeney, sophomore catcher Tommy Nawa, senior second baseman Daniel Cortines and senior outfielder Evan Williams, who will play for Oklahoma State next year.
