Long-time Little Elm resident loses life in tragic accident

Published: Thursday, May 17, 2012 1:48 PM CDT
A long-time and well-known Little Elm man lost his life in a tragic accident two weeks ago while doing yard work with his son.

On May 3, Charles Posey, 74, and his son were working in a yard with a tractor pulling a bush hog, a rotary motor attached to the back of the tractor. While the tractor was still running, Posey was standing in front of the back tire of the tractor when for some reason, the tractor was put into gear, knocking him down and running over him with the bush hog.

The Denton County Sheriff's Office responded to a call Posey's wife, who was on a porch at the time, had placed after her son yelled for her to call 911. However, Posey was killed almost instantly from the accident.

"The vibration [on tractors] will move the gear knob out of gear, but," said Tom Reedy, Denton County Sheriff's Office public information officer, "I don't know if that was the case here."

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner ruled Posey's death as an accident, which occurred a little after 5:30 p.m. His funeral was held last week.

Posey was a well-known figure in Little Elm and a long-time resident. Before retiring, he owned both Posey Welding on Eldorado Parkway and Posey Express BBQ. Little Elm Interim Town Manager Doug Peach remembered Posey and all that he did for the community.

"He was always the kind of person there to help somebody out. If anybody was ever in need, he was there to lend a hand," Peach said. "He was just one of those people in the community that makes Little Elm the kind of place people want to live."

Peach said Posey had worked on several projects throughout the town using his welding skills. For his barbecue business, which won him several awards across Texas, Posey had built a smoker that resembled a locomotive, prompting the name of Posey Express BBQ.

"You'd probably be amazed at what you'd find around Little Elm that he built or repaired," Peach said.

Peach also described Posey as hard-working and well-respected.

"He was a real great asset to the community," Peach said.
