County bond funds available for parks and open space
By Dan Eakin, deakin@starlocalnews.com
The Collin County Special Projects Department announced that non-profit organizations and municipalities may now apply for a share of $2.5 million in Parks & Open Space funds.
Funding is available as a result of the 2007 Collin County Bond Program for such projects as acquisition, trails and capital improvements for parks and open spaces located within Collin County.
Applications may be accepted for other projects that would benefit the community or county.
Applications will be accepted until July 9. An original and 12 copies of the application should be submitted.
The Parks Foundation Advisory Board will conduct a review process between July and September, and funding recommendations will be submitted to the Collin County Commissioners Court in October.
According to the Collin County website, the Project Funding Assistance Program has been in place since 1999 when the citizens approved a $5.75 million bond proposition for Parks and Open Space.
Those funds were used to create Collin County's Parks and Open Space Strategic Plan and assisted with the advancement of 33 projects for 25 different entities over a three-year period.
In November 2007, Collin County voters approved a $17 million bond proposition for Parks and Open Space. Between 2009 and 2016, Collin County is making these funds accessible to cities and non-profit organizations within the county.
The Collin County Parks Foundation Advisory Board administers the Project Funding Assistance Program, a reimbursement program. Applicants must have a minimum dollar for dollar in matching funds, comprised of direct cash or in-kind services for the project being proposed.
Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations, nonpolitical groups or any unit of local government including municipalities, school districts or county and must be located within the county.
Faith-based organizations are eligible to apply as long as inherently religious activities, such as worship and religious instruction, are not conducted.
