Frisco Fire Department receives Texas award
By Elizabeth Knighten, eknighten@starlocalnews.com
On Friday, the Frisco Fire Department received the 2012 C. Montgomery, Jr. Child Safety Award in Austin at the Lieutenant Governor's reception room.
Frisco Fire Chief Mack Borchardt said the department is being honored with the award because of its work through the programs at Frisco Fire Safety Town.
The department received the award from the Texas Office for the Prevention of Developmental Disabilities (TOPDD) Child Safety and Injury Prevention Task Force, which according to a release issued by the department, "presents this award annually to outstanding child safety leaders."
Prior to the award ceremony, Borchardt said that he would attend the event along with Leslie Girdner, Safety Town educator and Adam Hadowsky, a Frisco firefighter and volunteer at Safety Town.
"We have about 20 of our firefighters, who actually perform -- work as one of the educators in Frisco Fire Safety Town," he said. "They work on their days off as an overtime assignment to give that flavor of the firefighter and we've got Adam representing those firefighters."
Children visit Safety Town, Borchardt said, to see the firefighters. He also added, while the award is for the city, it also focuses on the work of the volunteers and employees at Safety Town.
"They're really probably going to get the award with my support," Borchardt said. "I'm going to be there to cheer them on and support them."
The award, the release said, was also given out to three other people and programs in the state including: Rosie Valadez-McStay, leader of the Center for Childhood Injury Prevention and director of government and community relations at Texas Children's Hospital; Cindy Healy, Physical Education teacher at Gattis Elementary School in Round Rock, Texas; as well as The Texas Medical Association's Hard Hats for Little Heads program.
Borchardt said he is proud that the program is being honored by the state of Texas.
"I think all of us would tell you it's our job and responsibility, but it's also a passion and the folks that work over there, each and everyone of them do it because they have a passion for prevention [and] education for young people," he said. "It's just great to be recognized by the state, I'm so proud of the folks over there and the efforts they put forth and I am thrilled that to have them receive this award."
