National Day of Prayer is scheduled for the first Thursday in May each year, and two programs are scheduled in McKinney.
The city's annual event will take place this year from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Towne Lake Park, located at 1405 Wilson Creek Parkway. Also, a National Day of Prayer event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the McKinney First Baptist Church, located at 401 W. Erwin Ave.
The program at Towne Lake Park will include a presentation of colors by the McKinney Police Honor Guard, the Pledge of Allegiance and a National Day of Prayer proclamation to be read by McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller.
Several youth leaders will also lead prayers, including those from Community Life Church, United Methodist Church, Hillcrest Christian Church, New Covenant Fellowship, Covenant Church and the Prayer Place.
Special music will be provided by a McKinney Multi-Church Worship Team made up of members from the Covenant Church, Hillcrest Christian Church, Community Life Church and St. Gabriel Catholic Community.
The music will include "Our God," "God Bless America," "How Great is Our God," "How Great Thou Art" and "How He Loves."
The program at McKinney First Baptist will begin with a presentation of colors by the McKinney Job Corps ROTC, the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem and a scripture reading and devotional.
Following a period of praise and worship and an explanation of the purpose of National Day of Prayer, a prayer session will include prayers led by different people for city officials, state and national leaders, educators, administrators and school board members.
Louis Rosenthal, who was recently named senior pastor at McKinney First Baptist, said a large number of city and state officials have been invited to participate in the prayer service. He said those invited are to respond no later than Tuesday.
He said McKinney Mayor Pro Tem Travis Ussery will participate in the program, as will Darion Culbertson, a member of the Fairview Town Council. Other area city and state officials are also expected.
Before coming to McKinney, Rosenthal was minister of Christian education and prayer at Westside Baptist Church in Lewisville where he coordinated National Day of Prayer programs each year between 2007 and 2011.
Those programs always featured Lewisville city officials and state officials who led prayers and supported National Day of Prayer.
Rosenthal emphasized that people from all races and religions are invited to attend the National Day of Prayer event at McKinney First Baptist.
The theme for the National Day of Prayer event is: "Prayer: America's Hope."
In 1952, the United States Congress enacted legislation establishing the first Thursday in May as National Day of Prayer. David Jeremiah is serving as honorary chairman of this year's events, which are being coordinated out of Colorado Springs, Colo.
