Playwright expands her wingspan

Published: Wednesday, April 4, 2012 10:56 AM CDT
The Colony playwright Janice Rose knows the toxic power of secrets. She also knows the transforming power of revealing secrets.

That is what her new play, "Tilling for FIGS," is all about. The work is being given a staged reading at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas on April 19 and 20.

A staged reading is not a full production of a play with a set and props. Actors read the play and act out a few scenes on stage.

As actors try out for plays, theatres often try out plays. A staged reading is a way for audiences, actors, directors and authors to try out a new work without the pressure of a full production.

In this case, WingSpan Theatre Co. is bringing "Tilling for FIGS" to the light of day. The reading is directed by WingSpan artistic director Susan Sargeant and performed by Beverly Daniel.

Rose wrote the one-character play after self-publishing a book of poetry, "Magnolia Moon, Texas Sage." She decided that her poems needed to be given more life than is possible within the pages of a book. That is how "Tilling for FIGS" began.

The word FIGS in the title is an acronym which Rose said you have to come to the staged reading to find out what the letters stand for.

"I'm looking forward to audience feedback," Rose said. "It's scary and thrilling and exciting all at the same time."

She said she grew up in a small Southern town where "everybody knew everybody's business." As a child she knew there were secrets, but didn't know what they were.

When she grew older she began asking about the secrets in her family and was not prepared for the life-changing effect the revelation of those secrets would have.

The play takes place during World War II when her father returns home from the service. He comes home bearing gifts and promises.

"The play has humor and transformation as well as the story. It's about when we can share our stories and it's about healing. It bears telling because it shows how secrets can be very harmful," Rose said.

Rose has also acted in various theatres around the Metroplex and has done film and television work. She also teaches writing courses to adults and senior citizens.

"Tilling for FIGS" will be performed at the Bath House Cultural Center on White Rock Lake at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, April 19 and 20. There is not a set ticket price. Both performances are pay-what-you-can. For reservations call 214-675-6573 or email wingspan@wingspantheatre.com.
