Godwin selected by Paris council for city manager position

Published: Wednesday, March 21, 2012 3:42 PM CDT
Fairview Town Manager John Godwin has a new job lined up in Paris, Texas.

The nearly 10-year town manager was selected by the Paris City Council on March 5 to break the city's 14-month stretch without a city manager, according to the online news site eParisExtra.com.

While Godwin has not been made a formal offer as of yet, the Paris council picked Godwin over two other candidates the same day he was interviewed for the job, according to the site.

Speaking to the Allen American Tuesday, Godwin confirmed he had been in talks with the city of Paris and said he made the decision to seek another job to explore other opportunities in larger cities -- Paris has 26,000 residents versus Fairview's 8,000.

"Fairview's a great place, I love living here and I'd love to stay for several more years if I can do that," he said.

Godwin listed the development of The Village at Fairview, the nearly $7 million boost to the town's fund balance, a five-time bond rating increase and the establishment of a full-time police force and paid fire department as his proudest accomplishments in Fairview.

Mayor Sim Israeloff and council members did not respond to emails requesting comment on Godwin's possible departure.

" I would ask Mr Godwin to call me to discuss what I know about Paris before he accepts any job in this city. I will open his eyes about this city. My name is Joe Eastman. He can reach me any time at the folloeing phone number: 903-421-1483. I hate to see any one go to work here with out being informed about what has been going in Paris since I first moved here to help start up the Paris Campbell's Soup Plant in early 1965. Although i moved away and now have returned for the past 10 years I have kept up with happenings while I was gone. The city council now is the worst that I have ever seen. If you decide to accept this job make sure you get a golden parachute because they will wind up fighting among eather because they cannot agree on anything and you will be fall guy. Just today, the Paris news published an article which said that the mayor did not vote for you being the top canditate because of you previous problems with your family. Now is this any way for the city fathers to start a relationship with a possible city manager. I don't think so.
Call me anytime. i will be glsd to talk to you. "
