Foodie delight: Food trailer festival on Main Saturday

Published: Friday, April 27, 2012 3:37 PM CDT
On Saturday, residents can eat to their heart's content at the Downtown Frisco StrEATS Gourmet Food Truck and Music Festival from 3 to 7 p.m.

The event which will be held at the gazebo on Fourth Street between Main and Elm Street will have 10 gourmet food trucks and an additional ice cream sandwich truck.

Judy Eguez, J& J downtown coordinator and city planner said the company wanted to host the event to entice residents and attendees to visit the downtown area.

"[We] have some great shopping, there's some dinning there as well," Eguez said. "A lot of people just drive by it, and we just really wanted people to stop there and shop, and I thought it was a great idea to have some gourmet food trucks there and let people enjoy the music and walk around."

Some of the food trucks that are scheduled to attend the festival include: Easy Slider, JoDawgs, a gourmet hot dog vendor, Lee's Grilled Cheese, a grilled cheese sandwich truck that has toppings from bacon to jalapenos, and Cajun Tailgators. The event will also feature a beer and wine garden.

"We have a diverse menu," Eguez said. "We have everything from whoopee pies, ice cream sandwiches and then we have some gourmet tacos like gourmet Korean tacos, SoCal style tacos; we have gourmet hot dogs, it's a huge array of foods."

Eguez said the companies are from all around the Dallas, Fort Worth region.

"Fort Worth has two food trailer parks and they're always in Dallas," she said. "They have operated in the DFW area except for Cool Haus, which is a new one, and they're going to be launching at Frisco StrEATS."

Cool Haus, a gourmet ice cream sandwich food truck, which recently joined the food festival, has locations in Miami, New York and Los Angeles, Eguez said.

Though the gourmet fare is not free, attendees are invited to shop and listen to music entertainment that will be provided by the Frisco School of Rock.

"They're going to be playing -- quite a few bands playing, we're also going to have Dave Thomas, he's going to be playing," Eguez said. "With School of Rock, they have different bands; they're just going to keep rotating. They're a fun crowd and they're really excited. The kids are really talented."

Eguez said the festival, which could see 1,500 to 3,000 people, is also sponsored by the Main Street Merchants Association and the Downtown Advisory Board for the City of Frisco.

Jo Ann Fritz, secretary for the Main Street Merchants Association and co-owner of Blue Door Boutique with Glenda McMichael, said her store will have some sales during the event, as well as snacks and drinks.

Fritz added that the event will help area residents recognize that there are local shops and boutiques in the heart of the city.

"People drive Main Street all the time, but they're in a hurry or they're going somewhere and they really just don't have the time to just stop and shop the great merchants in Downtown Frisco," she said. "We just want people to know that we're down here, that there are great merchants, [and] great eating establishments in this area."

The event is cash only. For information, go to www.facebook.com/DowntownFriscoStrEATS

" Awesome event! Obviously their first event and some kinks need to be worked out (probably not expecting that big of a crowd,)But... Way to go Down Town Frisco for taking a chance and trying something new. Look forward to new and improved events! "
