Girls basketball: Lady Jags finish second in Frisco

Published: Friday, November 18, 2011 7:08 PM CST
Last week's Frisco ISD Varsity Tip-Off Classic signified the opening of the non-district girls basketball season and featured many of the top squads from the area.

But when all was said and done, it was teams from District 8-5A that were left flexing their muscles.

Plano East claimed the title, with Flower Mound earning second and Marcus reaching the semifinals before settling for fourth. Plano Senior also reached the quarterfinals from 8-5A.

The Lady Jaguars came up short against the Lady Panthers Saturday in the finals, 52-35, on the heels of a semifinal victory over rival Marcus, 54-45. On Friday, the Lady Jaguars edged out Lewisville, 52-51, after pasting Prosper earlier in the day, 62-28.

Ashley Deary and Nicole Smallwood netted 12 points apiece to pace the win over the Farmers, while Deary posted 27 points in the victory against the Lady Marauders.

Marcus made its way to the semifinals by defeating Concordia Lutheran (49-38), Lubbock Coronado (49-44) and Ursuline (44-34). In the third-place game, the Lady Marauders came up short against Rockwall (39-31).

Leading scorers for the Lady Marauders were Vanessa Jones against Rockwall (10 points), Sierra Bone and Jenna Davis against the Lady Jaguars (16 and 14 points, respectively), Jones against Ursuline (13 points) and Morgan Easley against Concordia (15 points).

After dropping Friday's quarterfinal against the Lady Jaguars, Lewisville bounced back to top Ursuline (63-53) before coming up just short against Plano (39-38). The Farmers also defeated Denton Ryan on Friday, 65-38, behind 17 points from Kristin Winnier and 15 from Elizabeth Simon.

Jada Butts scored a team-high 18 points against the Lady Wildcats, while Aubree Butts and Kristin Winnier scored 20 points apiece in the win over Ursuline.

Flower Mound and Marcus continue their preparation for district this weekend by competing in the eighth annual Lady Jags Tournament, while Lewisville took part in the Allen Lady Eagle Hoopfest.
