Volleyball: Flower Mound sweeps Marcus
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, Staff writer
FLOWER MOUND — After spotting Marcus’ volleyball team a 17-12 lead in Game 1, Flower Mound played a near-flawless match to storm back an sweep the Lady Marauder’s, 26-24, 25-20, 25-21 and draw even with Marcus in the District 6-5A standings.
“I thought our key was the intensity that the girls played with,” said Marci Brinkman, Flower Mound coach. “And our defense was absolutely amazing. Annie Aspenson did a great job back there and dug a lot of balls up. And our blocks did well. We really did a great job defensively, all-around.”
Marcus coach Christie Liles echoed Brinkman’s thoughts.
Marcus seemed to start well, leading, 17-12, following a 9-4 spurt in which Haley Neisler had kills on four of six possessions. The run got the Marcus crowd — which was large in support of a “pink-out” to support Breast Cancer Awareness Week and featured a raffle and donations to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure — behind the team.
However, the Lady Jaguars responded to a timeout by Brinkman, pulling to within 20-17.
With Flower Mound trailing and facing game point, 24-21, the Lady Jags rattled off the next five points. The rally was sparked by consecutive kills by Rachael Cunningham, including a drop-shot.
“I think we picked the momentum up late in the first game and just kept it going from there,” Brinkman said. “Rachael had an awesome game returning from a back injury and played smart. She didn’t always have the hard kills, but she found spots to hit it to. Our middles played great the whole match. We only had a couple of hitting errors.”
Marcus, meanwhile, struggled to find a groove.
With the score tied, 13-13, in Game 2, Flower Mound’s middle’s powered their way to a 22-17 advantage prompting a Marcus timeout. But it couldn’t slow the Lady Jags, who closed out the game, 25-20.
The team’s played a back-and-forth Game 3, but once again it was Flower Mound who took control late.
With Marcus leading, 20-18, the Lady Jaguars went on to win seven of the next eight points.
“I thought we were un-coachable tonight,” Liles said. “We passed the ball, but offensively we didn’t make good decisions whether it was our setters or hitters.”
Aspenson led Flower Mound with 36 digs.
The Lady Jaguars also spread the ball around. Cunningham had nine kills, while Rachel Riley had eight, Liz Theesfeld had seven, and Rebecca Green, Brittney VanArsdale and Macey Singleton each had six.
“That’s what you want right there,” Brinkman said. “When you spread the ball around the defense has a tough time knowing where the set is going.”
Erin Gonzales and Molly Foreman added 18 and 16 assists, respectively.
Flower Mound continues at 7 p.m. Friday against Coppell.
“They’re a great team and we are going to have to play with the same intensity for the entire match again,” Brinkman said.
Marcus will look to rebound at 7 p.m. Friday against Hebron.
“They’re good,” Liles said of the Lady Hawks. “They’re going to be big and strong and we can’t make very many mistakes. We can’t go back to old Marcus. Where we were in pre-district.”
