Police say lakes were safe over holiday

Published: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 5:02 PM CDT
It was all quiet on local lakes during the Memorial Day weekend. And that was a good thing.

Local police reported very few problems at Grapevine and Lewisville lakes during the holiday weekend.

Division Chief Steve Carter, of the Lewisville Fire Department, said everything was quiet on both land and water over the long weekend, both at Lewisville Lake and on highways and roadways in the city.

While the Lewisville Fire Department’s emergency units were poised to head for the lake in case of any emergencies, none were reported despite the fact that hundreds of people were at the lake boating, swimming, water skiing, picnicking, etc.

Carter said Lewisville emergency vehicles went to only one major wreck over the weekend. A motorcycle rider was taken by ambulance to a Dallas hospital.

Lt. Clay Pierce, of the Flower Mound Police Department, said there were no reported drownings on the Flower Mound side of Grapevine Lake and that there were no other major incidents on the lake either.

Pierce said there were two arrests made for public intoxication, two citations issued for possession of alcoholic beverages in a park and one traffic citation issued for not having liability insurance at the lake surrounding the Corps of Engineer parks.

“Overall, it was a pretty quiet holiday weekend around the lake,” Pierce said. “Part of it was probably because of increased patrol and awareness.”

Pierce said it was good that there were no incidents on the lake, especially considering the police boat was broken for most of the weekend.

“So we were limited on that,” Pierce said.

Pierce added that another reason things were calm was because parts of the Corps of Engineers parks were gated, as opposed to previous years.

“In years past, we’ve been a little busier,” Pierce said.

Dan Eakin contributed to this report.
