Softball: Lady Jaguars cruise past Farmers

Published: Tuesday, April 14, 2009 11:21 PM CDT
Tuesday’s District 6-5A matchup against Flower Mound proved to be a tough one for Lewisville’s softball team and their bodies.

Flower Mound’s second hitter, Natalie Huse, laced a line-drive up the middle on the fourth pitch of the game off of Lewisville pitcher Alyssa Barker’s leg for a base hit. Barker would stay in the game, but coach Lori Alexander said she may have been affected by the play.

One inning later, Lewisville catcher Amanda Scott injured her leg chasing down a wild pitch behind home plate and would not return.

Then there were the Lady Jaguar bats, which pounded out 19 hits on their way to a 13-0 win in five innings in Lewisville.

Flower Mound improved to 6-1 in district with the win, one game behind first-place Marcus.

Lewisville, meanwhile, falls to 1-6 in district and have lost their past four contests, each against the top four teams in the district.

“We swung the bat well today,” said Flower Mound coach Mark Larriba. “The biggest thing was that we met our goals. Before the game, the girls get together and set goals, one was to swing at good pitches and battle with two strikes. They reached that today.”

Flower Mound struck out three times, two of which came in the final inning.

“When you have a team like that, it comes down to pitching,” said Lewisville coach Lori Alexander. “We did the best we could do, but when they get base hit after base hit, it’s hard to do anything. I think the team also had a tough time focusing and coming back when one of their teammates went down.”

Barker allowed nine runs on 11 hits in two-plus innings before giving way to Krysta O’Neal, who surrendered four runs on eight hits in three innings.

“I was really kind of surprised,” Alexander said. “I went with Barker because I thought a little slower tempo for them would throw them off. But, even when I made the switch to Krysta, who throws a little harder, they were just right back on it.”

The Lady Jaguars also played solid defense behind starting pitcher Christina Kim.

Flower Mound turned a double play initiated by second baseman Bethany Hardzinski, who threw to shortstop Taylor Hoagland at second base for the first out. Hoagland then threw a rocket to first to retire Barker.

Flower Mound first baseman Hannah Patillo, as well as Hoagland, also retired a pair of Farmer base-runners on ground balls by firing to third base for a force out to spoil Lewisville sacrifices.

“Our defense played well too,” Larriba said. “Our pitching struggled a little bit, but our defense bailed them out. We came in and played solid defense and that has been a strength of us all season.”

While Kim didn’t allow a Lewisville hit until the bottom of the fifth inning — a single by Hailey Howerton — she had a tough time with a patient Lewisville offense that drew seven walks and a hit by pitch. But, with runners on base, Kim and the defense stepped up, forcing the Farmers to strand seven base runners in five innings.

Flower Mound’s offense was hitting out of the gate. The Lady Jags scored three runs in the first, four runs in the second, two runs in the third and four runs in the fourth.

The Lady Jaguars had a run score from every position in the batting order and had six players with multiple hits. Hoagland went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Hardzinski went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Kayleigh Waltz had two hits and two RBI, while Catie Bossard went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Lewisville continues at 7 p.m. Friday at Hebron, while Flower Mound plays at 7 p.m. Friday against Southlake Carroll in Flower Mound.
