Council to weigh smoking ban

Published: Sunday, November 2, 2008 9:45 AM CST
A public hearing on proposed amendments to the town’s code of ordinances relative to smoking regulations is among the items set for discussion at Monday’s Flower Mound Town Council meeting.

The town council will be presented the proposed ordinance for approval consideration at the meeting, which is set for 6 p.m. at town hall.

The ordinance, if adopted as is, would prohibit smoking in all restaurants, bars, retail stores, indoor places of employment and public parks. Hotels and motels would have similar smoking restrictions.

There would also be a setback of 25 feet from any entry point to a public building or place.

Town staff surveyed a variety of food establishments to review their voluntary smoking restrictions. It also examined a variety of smoking ordinances and policies in neighboring cities.

If approved, the town’s smoking ordinance would take effect Jan. 1.

Also at the meeting, the council is set to consider a request to amend the land development regulations to allow an impervious pavement surface to be used in street sections in certain parts of town.

A master plan amendment, rezoning request and development plan request will also be considered for Whisper Creek, a residential subdivision located east of Long Prairie Road and north of Spinks Road.

" While I don't smoke I strongly oppose any smoking ban. Business owners should be FREE to make their own choice. If I don't like a business that allows smoking i will take my business elsewhere. Lets not start taking away people's rights so quickly "
