Mayor: Facility puts community in CAC

Published: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 1:55 PM CDT
Flower Mound Mayor Jody Smith didn’t take long to respond when asked which amenities of the new Community Activity Center (CAC) she’s going to use first.

“The outdoor pool and the lazy river,” Smith said. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Smith, other town officials and local media got a glimpse of the CAC on Monday, as facility manager Jason Brown led a tour through each area of the CAC that totals about 68,000 square feet indoors and outdoors.

Upon completion of the tour, Smith praised the progress the parks staff has made on the CAC, which is set to open to the public at 7 a.m. June 21.

She also touted her support for the facility, which she admits she didn’t always have.

“I’m in awe and am excited to see this come to fruition,” Smith said. “But, years ago, I wasn’t in support of the CAC. I didn’t see the need for it back then. Our community has grown now to have this need. This will bring the whole community together. It’s the best thing to happen here.”

With other fitness businesses in the area, the fear from Smith and other town officials early on was the CAC would have to compete with those. But, the concept of the CAC separates itself from fitness facilities, the mayor said.

“It’s not an athletic center, it’s a community center,” Smith said.

Smith believes the designers have done a good job at integrating fitness with fun.

Included in the 3,397-square foot fitness area will be 24 pieces of cardio equipment with media-player plug-ins. There will also be dumbbells and barbells, medicine balls and various exercise equipment such as a cable crossover, selectorized weight equipment and stretcher stations.

There will also be a 440-foot long indoor track that surrounds the 9,434-square foot gymnasium. The gym will typically be split into two courts and will usually have a side open for members. The courts will allow for basketball and volleyball leagues, as well as play for pickleball, badminton and four square.

The indoor pool measures 6,163 square feet. There are eight lanes for competition, as well as a large shallow area for open swim time. A 152-foot long tube slide and a splash pad are other features of the pool.

The outside pool measures 7,585 square feet. There are three lap lanes, a shallow area with a play feature, a long-winding current channel and a vortex whirlpool, as well as two 2-story slides.

The CAC’s accommodation for all ages is apparent upon entry. To the left is the Chill Zone, a 1,866-square foot room that includes an area for billiards, shuffleboard, foosball, air hockey and two video game stations. The Youth Action Committee, a group of high school students that uses leadership to partner with the town on events, named the room. The Chill Zone will also have specific times set aside for seniors as well.

The Golden Lounge, about 2,000 square feet, will be the exclusive room for the Seniors in Motion program.

Three rooms that measure a combined 2,800 square feet will be used as multi-purpose rooms for all age groups.

And, for parents wishing to use the CAC but in need of a place for their children to stay, the facility offers the Tot Drop for ages 6 months to 9 years. Brown ensured the safety by detailing the check-in procedure that includes using a two-part sticker for the child and parent, a photo ID of the parent, a registration form and a children-only area.

More than 600 people have applied for memberships, Brown said, echoing Smith’s thoughts on the community responding to the CAC favorably already.

“The town has done a great job of building the excitement for the CAC,” Brown said. “So it’s been easy to sell this. Once people start to tour the facility, I can’t imagine the sales slowing down.”
