Flower Mound Police Department offers vacation house checks.

Published: Friday, April 27, 2007 6:37 PM CDT
When residents go on vacation, the last thing they want to worry about is if someone is breaking into their house. One way to have some piece of mind is to sign up for the Flower Mound Police Department’s free vacation house check program.

The program, which is primarily for residents that do not have alarm systems, helps the police department with crime and prevention. Residents that do have an alarm system will be monitored as a close patrol.

A close patrol consists of daily police drive-by and observation.

The house checks, also daily, differ because the officers will physically walk around the house and make sure that the doors are locked and that there is no unwanted activity at the house.

“If were checking the house every day and someone breaks in, we would be able to find out what happened sooner than if we waited for the residents to come back from their vacation and tell us,” said Paul Boon, Flower Mound police department training coordinator.

To qualify for the program, residents will need to meet certain criteria. These criteria’s include that the residence must be a single family dwelling, there must be no other person staying at the dwelling in the absence of the resident, the dwelling must have no active alarm system and the residence absence from the dwelling must be no less than three days and no more than 14 days.

After the 14 day, the vacation check will become a close patrol.

To join the program residents will need to fill out a form at the Flower Mound police department, 4150 Kirkpatrick Lane.

They will need to state such things as the start and ending date of their vacation, names of persons allowed on premises, the vehicles left on premises outside of the garage and the number of pets left on the premises.

“These house checks allow residents to have a little piece of mind when they go on vacation,” Boon said.
