Tournament play continues for Flower Mound, Marcus

ARLINGTON --- After watching her team play its first game at the Arlington Classic, Flower Mound volleyball coach Marci Brinkman has one request for her team.
“No more warm up games,” Brinkman said.
The Lady Jaguars heeded her advice and reeled off a pair of wins to down Weatherford, 15-25, 25-16, 25-18 and advance to the second round on Friday.
“They played really well in the last two games,” Brinkman said. “They weren’t talking in the first game and weren’t putting balls away. Then they started communicating and began playing better.”
In the opening game, the Lady Jaguars stayed with Weatherford point for point early. But with the score tied at 12, the Lady Kangaroos slipped away going on a 13-3 run to put the game away.
Weatherford reeled off seven consecutive points with the help of three Flower Mound errors. The Lady Jaguars committed 11 errors in the game.
Flower Mound took control early in the second game was the Lady Jaguars scored five consecutive points to behind the serving of Kerri Feczko to expand overcome a 4-7 Weatherford advantage and take a 10-7 lead.
The Lady Roos cut Flower Mound’s advantage to 16-14 before the Lady Jaguars went on an 8-2 run to force a deciding third game. During the run, Kaley Harrison delivered three kills and Sara Rudeen registered five service points.
The Lady Jaguars continued their surge in the third game pulling ahead 9-4 and pressing that lead to 15-9 thanks to a kill by Harrison sandwiched between blocks by Kristen Rice. Flower Mound kept up the pressure the rest of way and won the match using a 6-2 run.
Marcus finds success in Pearland
Marcus opened play at the Pearland tournament on Thursday with wins over Sugarland Elkins, 25-22, 26-28, 26-24, and Channelview, 25-12, 25-21, and a loss to Smithson Valley, 25-10, 25-19.
The loss dropped the Lady Marauders (9-10) into the Gold bracket, which they won last year.
On Friday, Marcus lost to Katy, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23, and bounced back with a win over Alvin, 25-19, 25-18.
Going into today’s matches, Marcus is ranked in the top 21 team in the 64-team field. The Lady Marauders will take on League City Clear Creek this morning in a single elimination match.
“We are definitely playing better,” Marcus coach Cristie Liles said. “We are making strides in the right direction. We are figuring out things slowly but surely.”
Liles praised the play of middle blockers Emily Maher, Brittany DeWeese.
