Flower Mound, Marcus find perfection on Friday

Published: Friday, August 25, 2006 9:01 PM CDT
Flower Mound’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to five games on Friday as the Lady Jaguars cut a wide swath through their competition at the Granbury Summer Sizzler Tournament.

The Lady Jaguars (7-5) were perfect in pool play, and followed that up with a 25-17, 25-16 victory over Irving Nimitz in the first game of bracket play Friday afternoon.

“We just seem to be coming together and playing our game,” Flower Mound coach Marci Brinkman said. “You can tell on their faces they are starting to have a little fun now. They aren’t going to win games if they aren’t having fun.”

With the team’s success, Brinkman was able to get playing time for her entire roster. She was glad to see that even though she juggled her lineup and rotation, her players stayed focused.

Brinkman attributed the squad’s improvement to good serve receive efforts, strong defense and passing and the ability to put the ball away. Something the Lady Jaguars hadn’t been doing earlier in the season.

Flower Mound returns to action at 9:30 a.m. facing the winner of the last night’s match between Whitney and Burleson.

The Lady Jaguars rolled through pool play with victories over Denton Guyer (25-16, 25-27, 25-16), Irving MacArthur (25-18, 25-22) and Crowley (25-16, 18-25, 25-19).

Brinkman was pleased with the efforts of libero Lauren Toone, outside hitter Katie Steimer played, setters Hanna Johnson and middle blockers Sara Rudeen and Kristen Rice.

Lady Marauders cruise in Allen

Marcus volleyball coach Cristie Liles was in a much better mood Saturday afternoon compared to her attitude on Tuesday night.

Liles had just watched her team cruise through its bracket at the Allen Tournament with a 3-0 record. She was especially fired up because the Lady Marauders defeated Arlington, 25-18, 25-20. The Lady Colts had manhandled Marcus on the opening night of the season in three games.

“I guess my team has decided that they kind of like to win,” Liles said.

The Lady Marauders won pool play games over Arlington, Bonham (25-16, 35-25, 26-24) and Wylie (Wylie 25-11, 25-22). Marcus then defeated Dallas Greenhill, 25-19, 25-17, to advance to the to today’s championship bracket play.

Marcus will play the winner of Friday’s match between Frisco Centennial and Richardson Pearce at 9:15 a.m. today. Centennial is fresh off a winning the championship at the last weekend’s Denton Ryan Kickoff Classic.

Liles attributed her team’s turnaround to the fact they are “finally listening to what the coaches are saying.”

“They are not trying to overplay,” Liles said. “They are getting use to playing with each other and starting to jell. They are having fun.”

Marcus entered the tournament with a pair of wins at last weekend’s Duncanville Tournament of Champions.

Liles cited the play of sophomore outside hitter Michelle Hundt, junior middle blocker Emily Maher and senior libero, Chelsea Saunders.

Lady Jaguars top Irving

Flower Mound made its home debut with a 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23 non-district victory over Irving on Tuesday night.

The win was even more satisfying for the Lady Jaguars considering Irving had beaten them last weekend at Denton Ryan Kickoff Classic.

“We played excellent,” Brinkman said. “I was so proud of them considering they had already lost to them. They proved they could take control of a match. They played their game and didn’t let the errors get to then.”

Kayle Walts drew praised from Brinkman after delivering 12 kills, 9 blocks and 17 assists in the win. Cassie Gonzalez also had a big night with 12 kills. Hanna Johnson helped the offense with 17 assists while Lauren Toone proved to be an anchor on defense with 12 digs.

Kristen Rice provided offense with 6 kills and 3 blocks as did Sarah Rudeen (5 blocks, 3 kills).
