Area cities hosting fireworks extravaganzas

Published: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 10:40 PM CDT
Community firework displays this year will be limited to municipally sponsored events as cities throughout the area have placed bans on the use of fireworks. The dry conditions have led city officials to completely prohibit the use of personal fireworks.

“As dry as it is there is no safe way to really shoot fireworks.” said Southlake Fire Marshal David Barnes.

Barnes explained that Southlake and the surrounding cities will be banning fireworks this 4th of July. In the local area Tarrant, Denton, and Parker counties will be included in the firework ban. Buying fireworks is permitted, but shooting them in the banned areas is prohibited. Barnes sited the dangerous conditions as reason for the ban on fireworks.

The Southlake Fire Department will be on hand to make sure that Southlake’s “Stars and Stripes” Independence Day Celebration and fireworks display goes off without a hitch. Barnes said that the area around the launch point will be fenced off and that extra firemen will be on duty at the Southlake Town Square to make sure that “fallout” from the fireworks display doesn’t reach any spectators.

“We have a 300 foot circumference that we call a clear area around the fireworks that is fenced off.” said Barnes.

Southlake’s fireworks display will be fired off of the west side of the Southlake Town Square parking garage this year. Kristin White, the Recreation Specialist for the City of Southlake, said that the parking expansion will allow more people to park at Town Square for the event. Free parking with a shuttle service to Town Square will also be available at White’s Chapel Methodist Church.

“Stars and Stripes,” Southlake’s Independence Day celebration will begin at 5 pm with face painters, balloon artists, the Southlake Swing Band, the Southlake Choir, and refreshments. The fireworks display will begin at about 9:30 pm and is about 23 minutes long.

Other fireworks displays around the Metroplex will also be hosted by cities such as Carrollton, Coppell, Flower Mound, and Lewisville.

The city of Carrollton’s Fourth of July celebration will begin at 6 pm at the C-FB ISD Soccer Fields (2001 Kelly Boulevard). The event promises “giant slides,” roving stilt walkers, clowns, and a free shuttle bus service. There will be no parking allowed at the soccer fields.

Coppell’s fireworks display will take place after 9 pm at Andrew Brown Jr., Community

Park East. Attendees are invited to arrive at 5 pm for a picnic in the park. Picnic baskets are encouraged or food can be purchased at the park.

Flower Mound’s fireworks show will be held at Circle R Ranch, 5901 Cross Timbers Road. The fireworks display will start at dusk and there will be a free shuttle service from Flower Mound High School starting at 7 pm.

Lewisville’s fireworks display is going to take place at Vista Ridge Mall, located on Interstate 35E at FM 3040. Events begin at 6 pm with performances from “Le Freak” and “Reckless Kelly.” The fireworks show will start at 9:30 pm.
